In a landmark moment for North West Province football, Orbit College has ascended to the Betway Premiership for the first time after clinching victory in the promotion playoffs. This accomplishment was sealed with a crucial 1-0 victory over Cape Town City at Rustenburg’s Olympia Park Stadium on a thrilling Wednesday afternoon.
The decisive goal came early in the second half, courtesy of Letsie Koapeng, who capitalized on Gomolemo Khoto’s deft work down the left flank. Khoto evaded his marker and delivered a precise cross for Koapeng to tap in at the near post, bringing Olympia Park to life with celebratory cheers.
Orbit College’s promotion marks a significant comeback for North West representation in the Premiership, a feat not achieved since Platinum Stars’ relegation in 2018. The victory also ensures Orbit finishes the mini-league with an unassailable six-point lead, ultimately relegating Cape Town City and Casric Stars to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
The game against Cape Town City was tense from the outset. Despite City controlling early possession, they failed to convert this advantage into tangible opportunities. In contrast, Orbit approached the match with a strategic counterattacking style, eventually wearing down the City defense.
City struggled to breach an organized Orbit backline, with their efforts well managed by goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane, who remained vigilant throughout. Despite late substitutions introducing fresh legs in Emile Witbooi and Fortune Makaringe, City could not overturn their fortunes.
As full-time approached, Orbit deftly managed their lead, commanding the pitch with game-management tactics that stymied City’s attempts at a comeback. City nearly had their moment in stoppage time, but a critical cross was mishit, sealing their fate and sparking jubilant celebrations from the home fans.
For Cape Town City, this relegation represents their first departure from the top eight tier since their formation in 2016, marking an end to a turbulent season. For Orbit College, it’s the dawn of a new era as they prepare to challenge established teams in the Betway Premiership next season.
